Expression of Interest - Audit and Risk Committee Independent Member 

East Gippsland Shire Council is seeking Expressions of Interest for the position of Independent Member of its Audit and Risk Committee

The Audit and Risk Committee is an advisory body to Council, providing independent oversight and advice on key areas including financial management, corporate governance, internal controls, risk management, compliance, and internal and external audit processes. 

Council is looking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced individual for a term of up to three (3) years, commencing in early 2026. To ensure continuity of knowledge and expertise, Committee members are appointed on staggered terms ranging from one to three years. 

The Committee comprises three independent external members, who collectively bring a diverse mix of professional skills and experience relevant to Council operations. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, integrity, and a strong understanding of governance and risk in a public sector context. 

The Committee meets at least five times per year, with meetings generally held online, offering flexibility and ease of participation. 

Note:  Council has recently made some changes to the Committee’s membership composition and structure.  These changes have not yet been reflected in the Committee’s Charter. 

Remuneration 

Remuneration for Independent Members of the Committee is $850 per meeting (indexed annually), inclusive of time spent on preparation for the meeting.

The Opportunity:

This is a hands-on, senior finance role where you’ll lead the finance function and provide critical commercial support across the group. Reporting to the company owners directly, you’ll have visibility and control over operational and development functions, ensuring strong financial governance while driving performance insights and operational change that support strategic decision-making and continued company growth.

You’ll be responsible for financial reporting, statutory compliance, team leadership and commercial analysis — with the scope to make the role your own in a dynamic environment.

  • Lead, mentor and shape your own Accounts Payable and Receivable team, ensuring efficient daily operations and high standards.

  • Take ownership of cashflow management and forecasting for the company and group, including daily tracking and forward working capital forecasts.

  • Develop and oversee annual budgets, prepare quarterly forecasts, and deliver monthly overhead reviews and variance analysis.

  • Ensure all compliance obligations are met, including BAS, FBT, payroll tax, superannuation and other industry reporting.

  • Work closely with the groups external accountant ensuring any and all required adjustment journal are actioned so that group book work is compliant, consistent and correct

  • Produce accurate and timely monthly financial statements, including Work in Progress (WIP) calculations and project performance reports.

  • Oversee Balance Sheet and P&L reconciliations and ensure the integrity of financial data.

  • Manage the Payroll function end-to-end.

  • Take a lead role in external audits as required to secure new projects etc. as well as ensuring required documentation for EOFY reporting and MFR reporting is available when required

  • Partner with the CFO on strategic projects and commercial initiatives, contributing financial insight to support growth.


About You

You’re a finance professional with strong technical capability, commercial acumen and a collaborative mindset. You thrive in a casual yet fast-paced environments, enjoy leading teams, and can comfortably shift between detail work and strategic input.

What We’re Looking For:

  • CA or CPA qualified (or in the final stages of completion).

  • Minimum 5 years’ similar experience.
