The Audit, Safety and Risk team sits within the Governance and Risk Directorate and is responsible for providing a wide range of internal services to the organisation focused on risk, insurance, audit and work health and safety.

The recipients of the 2022 Safework NSW – Work Health and Safety Excellence Showcase award for Champions in Large Business (Government) category, the team are concentrating on driving a collaborative approach to educating staff on safety matters that impact their day to day life. In addition, we are also ensuring Council’s internal audit plan targets our high risks areas and complies with relevant laws, standards and legislation, and making improvements across our claims process.

In contributing to the overarching vision, the Senior Coordinator Internal Audit and Risk is responsible for seeking to accomplish Council’s objectives by bringing a systematic disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control and governance processes. This includes coordination of Council’s Enterprise Risk Management system, insurance policies and claims, contractual oversight of Council’s outsourced internal audit provider and the audit plan.

The successful applicant will require:

• Relevant tertiary qualifications in business, accounting or relevant discipline and/or significant equivalent industry experience.
• Previous experience as an internal auditor, with a sound understanding of the role and functions of Audit, Risk and Improvement Committees and internal audit processes.
• Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills to oversee Council’s internal audit contract and to build trust with senior executives, boards, and external regulators.
• Proven experience in developing, implementing, and monitoring Enterprise Risk Management Programs and related policies and frameworks, with a focus on embedding risk culture council wide.
• Experience in managing high-value insurance claims and advising on risk matters, including guiding staff and management through complex or sensitive issues.
• Demonstrated analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess risks in both operational and strategic contexts, influencing executive and board-level decision-making.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills to support the provision of professional advice, reporting, and high-level stakeholder engagement.
• Experience in preparing, presenting, and producing reports for boards, executive management, and governance committees, ensuring compliance with legislative and regulatory frameworks.
• Demonstrated ability to work flexibly and autonomously in a fast-paced environment, while leading key projects, supporting team members, and contributing to long-term risk programs and initiatives.
• High level of computer literacy, particularly in the MS Office suite, with the ability to develop dashboards and data-driven reporting to support strategic decisions.
• Management responsibility for the Insurance Officer, providing leadership, direction, and oversight of insurance claims, reporting, and stakeholder engagement.
• Class C drivers licence.

About this role:

• Permanent, full-time position
• 70 hour fortnight
• Access to Council's 9 day fortnight Accrued Day Off (ADO) arrangement
• Located at Council's Merrylands office, with occasional travel required across Council worksites, and may be required to work across any of Council’s work locations

Salary information: The salary and conditions of employment are in accordance with the NSW Local Government (State) Award.

• Grade 14 of the Cumberland Salary Structure with a salary range of $2,303.00 to $2,648.45 per week, plus 12% superannuation
