A bit about the role

This role sits in the City and Asset Planning Management team as part of the City Planning and Infrastructure division, which is responsible for planning, designing, building and maintaining the City of Casey for our growing community.

As Principal Recreation and Open Space Planner, you will lead, partner and collaborate across teams and organisations to deliver strategic open space and recreation plans and projects that contribute to a thriving and valued open space network.

You will provide strategic direction and develop policy, service levels and standards to ensure high quality open space, sport and recreation facilities for the City of Casey.

What you’ll deliver

  • Lead and manage the planning and delivery of open space, paths, trails, sport and recreation facilities including capital works planning and delivery.
  • Provide high level leadership and work collectively with internal council teams and external organisations.
  • Develop, review and coordinate assessment and analysis of community needs and demands for open space to inform policies, strategies, master plans, precinct structure plans and funding submissions.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships across organisational boundaries.
  • Actively advocate for recreation and open space outcomes and identify opportunities to achieve shared outcomes.
  • Proactively seek community and stakeholder involvement in planning and decision making through inclusive and meaningful engagement processes.
  • Demonstrate a shared leadership approach and model behaviours consistent with Casey values.
  • Mentor the two Senior Recreation and Open Space Planners and one Infrastructure Planner within the team.
  • Role model and commit to living the shared Casey philosophy, so the organisation fulfils its purpose through the shared vision, shared values, shared strategy and shared leadership.

What you’ll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications and/or a high level of skills and experience in recreation and open space, planning, or a similar field.
  • Leadership skills and experience leading projects in dynamic, evolving and complex environments.
  • Significant experience in policy, strategy and master plan development and implementation within the recreation and open space planning field.
  • Demonstrated experience leading project and community engagement projects/programs.
  • Strong knowledge of the parks and leisure industry, growth and established area planning, and capital works planning.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with budgeting principles and practices related to planning and project coordination.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in submission preparation, report writing, project brief development and management of consultants.
  • Willingness to undergo pre-employment background checks including: National Criminal History Check, Working with Children Check and Eligibility to Work check
