We’re seeking a Defence School Mentor (DSM) to support Defence families and children in our school community. The DSM helps mitigate the impact of mobility and parental absence by providing information, advocacy, and running programs that assist Defence dependants in integrating and thriving.

This casual position is initially 10 hours a week (approx) with the potential for more or additional roles, including classroom support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Liaise with families, school staff, and community groups

  • Provide advocacy and referrals to support services

  • Promote awareness of Defence family needs within the school

You’ll need:

  • Empathy and strong communication skills

  • Relevant qualifications or experience working with young people

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Skills in advocacy, problem-solving, and program delivery

  • Commitment to confidentiality and professionalism

  • Current Ochre Card (Working with Children Card in Northern Territory).

The DSM reports to the school principal and works closely with Heads of House and other key staff. This role is not teaching or counselling, and does not involve long-term one-on-one support.
