Teacher-Linguist / Miriwoong Language Education Facilitator

Mirima Dawang Woorlab-gerring Language and Culture Centre (MDWg) is a vibrant not-for-profit organization whose main mission is to revitalize the critically endangered Miriwoong language. Our Miriwoong Language Nest is a language education program currently reaching about 600 children through regular lessons taught by our team of Miriwoong language teachers. We are currently looking for a suitably qualified and experienced person to fill the role of Language Education Facilitator (LEF - Early Years) who will work hand in hand with the current Older Years counterpart. The LEF leads a team of Miriwoong employees in delivering our Miriwoong language education program in collaboration with local partners, including early learning centres and schools.

Her/his responsibilities include supervision, planning, and preparation of Miriwoong language lessons, training and engagement of Indigenous staff, as well as the development of curriculum resources and administrative tasks. (Please find further details on the following page.)

Prerequisites are the acquisition of a Working with Children Card and National Police Clearance, a valid Australian driver’s licence, native speaker fluency in English, Australian citizenship or permanent residency with full work rights, and a firm commitment for at least 2 years of employment in this position.


Some details about this position

This is a perfect role for a Teacher-Linguist, with a focus on coordinating the work of a team of Miriwoong language teachers. The LEF supports her/his team by building capacity of individuals to enhance their teaching skills, develop teaching resources, and prepare lessons for our Miriwoong language classes. In detail, this involves the following tasks:

  1. Supervise and coordinate the preparation and delivery of Miriwoong language learning sessions based on the locally adapted Language Nest model, in teamwork with our team of Indigenous Miriwoong Language Engagement Officers.

  2. Assist with the delivery of above sessions where required.

  3. Provide on-site professional development for our Language Engagement Officers with the aim of increasing their independent skills in session preparation and delivery.

  4. Support professional development of Language Engagement Officers as part of the DoE ALTT program, as well as through mentoring.

  5. Recruit and train additional Language Engagement Officers, in collaboration with senior staff.

  6. Create Miriwoong language teaching resources in teamwork with Indigenous and other staff.

  7. Liaise with partner organisations in order to maintain and extend positive working relationships.

  8. Supervise the curriculum planning process for the Miriwoong language from a second language acquisition perspective, in coordination with other staff.

  9. Conduct linguistic consultation about Miriwoong grammatical structures for implementation into lesson design, in collaboration with other staff.

  10. Monitor the budgets associated with the Language Nest, in collaboration with the other LEF and senior staff

  11. Comply with all reporting requirements by our funding partners and stakeholders, in collaboration with the other LEF.

  12. Undertake regular evaluation of progress of the program, in collaboration with the other LEF.

  13. Other duties as may be required.

Please note that the role of the LEF does not involve language teaching as this is a task reserved for Miriwoong staff.

The expected start date is on 19 January 2026 or soon thereafter.

This is a full-time Level 4 position (SACS-WA), subject to qualification and experience, based in Kununurra (Western Australia). We are prepared to discuss a Level 5 appointment with a highly qualified and experienced candidate.
