About the role

Are you a strategic communications specialist and engagement champion looking to make a real impact in local government? Yarra Ranges Council is seeking a dynamic Head of Communications & Engagement to lead a passionate team in shaping how we connect with our community.

Local government work is vast, complex, and deeply rewarding, touching every aspect of community life. In this pivotal role, you’ll:

  • Drive innovative, proactive communications that strengthen Council’s reputation and build trust with our community.

  • Champion meaningful and authentic engagement, ensuring our community is informed, involved and part of the decision-making process.

  • Lead a team of up to 12 with clarity and confidence, fostering creativity, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Provide expert communications advice and help guide Council’s response in managing issues or potential crises.

  • Deliver compelling content across digital and traditional channels.

  • Work closely with internal teams, media, government bodies and community groups.

This is a permanent full time role with a salary range between $128,554 and $138,596

Experience and skills we’re looking for

  • Proven experience in strategic communication, community engagement, or related fields.

  • Strong and positive leadership skills with the ability to manage a team in a fast paced, dynamic environment.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities.

  • A track record of handling high-pressure situations and issues management with strategic clarity.

  • A creative mindset and a passion for innovative communication strategies and campaigns.

  • A deep understanding of community dynamics and the ability to foster connections.

  • An established network of media contacts.

  • A can-do mindset and the ability to inspire others.
