About the opportunity

There is currently one (1) permanent - full time position available for immediate filling. 

This newly established position is responsible for leading DPIRD’s Animal Ethics Office (AEO) and overseeing its day-to-day operations, staff and projects. The role also provides high level support to the Animal Ethics Committees (AEC), ensuring the delivery of proactive, flexible and responsive services to the committees and their clients.

As a team leader, you will coordinate and manage the operations of the AEO and AECs, providing consistent, high-quality administrative and strategic support, whilst maintaining confidentiality and discretion at all times.

You will also drive continuous improvements by streamlining processes and leading the development and implementation of strategic, operational, and governance frameworks, policies and procedures to support the AEO and the two AECs DPIRD is responsible for.

About the Animal Ethics Committee

Under the Animal Welfare Act 2002, any proposed research or trial work involving animals and DPIRD resources must be approved by the department. The Wildlife AEC allows institutions and environmental scientists without access to an institutional animal ethics committee to operate in accordance with the conditions of their Scientific Use Licence whilst the DPIRD AEC ensures DPIRD and its employees meets its obligations under the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (the Code). Both committees ensure that the care and use of animals for scientific purposes is undertaken in an ethical and humane manner.

To be successful in this role, you will:

  • Demonstrate outstanding communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills, with the ability to build and maintain authentic relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.

  • Have the ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation and operate with a strong governance and compliance focus.

  • Be self-motivated, organised, and able to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Be a collaborative and supportive team player with a positive, can-do attitude and a willingness to assist others.

  • Bring demonstrated experience in managing a business unit, including stakeholder engagement, people leadership, and operational delivery.

  • Possess strong conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with an understanding of risk management principles related to agricultural or wildlife research operations.

  • Have previous Committee or Board experience and an understanding of animal welfare and ethical research issues (highly regarded).
